Research: Promotion

Audience research is carried out often so that the distributors know how and in what ways they should market their movie. It is estimated that $1 million is spent on research per movie. Below are the techniques that are involved in promoting these movies.

Trailers

Through various techniques such as teaser trailers, production companies are able to successfully introduce their film to dedicated movie fans. They are able to show the trailers before movies in cinemas hence interesting the audience and are also shown in television adverts so that the nation can look at upcoming movies. Trailers appear to be the most productive technique when interesting a target audience as many clips taken from the movie are shown, and if successfully put together in the correct way, it will entice the audience to want to see the movie. Trailers incorporate various methods in their approach to attract you such as giving a basic understanding of the storyline and a certain pace.
Distributors from hollywood are estimated to spend $4 billion on buying advertising on TV, newspapers and radio, showing that advertising in these mediums is the most effective way to lure the audience into wanting to watch the movie.

Posters

Posters come in many different sizes so they are applicable to different places whether it be on a bus stop or for purchasing for home use. The posters usually include photos of the characters but can also include landscape, symbolism, themes and mise en scene. Various posters are released which are all different hence giving the audience a better image of what the movie is about, who the characters are and what genre the movie is. Below we can see that there are clearly two different genres from the posters, and this is a method which distributors use in order for the audience to get more information out of the poster rather than just getting a picture.
